Our Class Wiki - So Far
Our Class Wiki - So Far
...what you have been doing to contribute to our class wiki. Pages you have created and/or edited. Describe in general terms content you have added. If you have not added any content yet, then at least describe the research you have done and what you are working on towards this goal.
For our class wiki, so far, I have done a little amount of work on our wiki website. However, my goal is to greatly elaborate on the wiki page I created on the new media and translation. One of the reason to why the world is becoming smaller by the year, is due to the language barriers that the new media has broken. I feel that this is something easily missed, because from experience when people think of the reason to why the world is shrinking, they immediately think of social media. However, without translation, these sites wouldn’t even be touched in other countries. Because languages are crucial, and main reason for miscommunication, I intent to greatly mention how translation machine, has helped the world unify. This is all true, thanks to the new media that has given us this power.
P2P File Sharing
P2P File Sharing
What is file sharing?
File sharing in the cyber world is referred to as the sharing of digital contents or providing access to a content, from one computer to another via the internet. Contents like, computer programs, mp3, movies, video games, electronic books, basically anything that is digital. File sharing allows many people to use the same digital content or file by some combination of being able to read or view it, write to or modify it, copy it, or even print it. Typically, a file sharing system, where it has one or more administrators.
What is P2P File sharing?
P2P or peer-to-peer allows the user to get access to the contents mentioned in the previous paragraph, by suing a software program that searches for other connected computers network on a P2P network to locate the desired content. The nodes (peers) of such networks are end-user computer systems that are interconnected via the internet.
What are some examples of P2P file sharing?
On his article “T HE BITTORRENT EFFECT” Clive Thompson, write off the origin of the infamous BitTorrent, better known as the best P2P program on the internet. With the idea of “Give and ya shall receive” the program gives the ability to users to be able to download content at a fast rate. This, in fact, has turned the “internet into the world’s largest TiVO”. Furthermore, movie producers have also used this program to promote themselves. For example, in the article “Content producers should take advantage of P2P, not fear” by an unknown author, “P2P site The pirate Bay, with its millions of unique daily users, was the initial point of explosion of interest in Steal in This Film”. Basically, because its free, and the producers wanted recognition, they upload one of their documentaries on The Pirate Bay, to get their attention and have people see it. This is great, because later on, producers can ask for donations, either via the P2P website or from consumers themselves. In the end, P2P programs can be used in a good way, it's not always meant to be used illegally.

Privacy & Confidentiality
In this post, discuss
how the issues of privacy and confidentiality are related to new media.
Something that I mentioned on my
term paper is that humans are social creature by nature. Expressing subjective
feelings to other individuals is very important. In fact, it is as important as
other human needs. Diana I. Tamir reveals on her medical journal “Disclosing information about the self
is intrinsically rewarding” that “information about personal
experiences arise from the intrinsic value associated with self-disclosure… represents an event with intrinsic
value, in the same way, as with primary rewards such as food and sex,…80% of posts to social media sites
consist simply of announcements about one’s own
immediate experiences”
(Tamir, pp. 8040). In other words,
people have a natural impulse to reveal their subjective experiences to others
because it brings an intrinsic reward. Tamir as argues that this is just as
important as other human needs, such as food, and sexual pleasures. This is a
major issue because individuals through the process of expressing their
subjective experiences often reveals personal information. This allows people with
bad intentions get a hold of these information to use it to commit crimes.
Crimes like identity theft, scams, etc. In the end, although the new media
allows individuals to communicate with ease, and creates a world with no
communication barriers, it does also open the possibility of cybercrimes. On a
side note, privacy is also effected by the new media. Because everyone is
allowed on the internet, we never know who is looking at our information. Like,
the government, employers, the authorities, etc. With that in mind, when individuals
expose personal information via the social media, they are allowing the
possibility of being monitor by other people. In the end, using the new media
with privacy in mind, can be the key to effectively using it, and at the same
time, being more protected from unknown threats.

Creativity and New Media
Without a doubt, Halloween is my favorite holiday of all time and even more than my actual birthday. Unfortunately, because of my job this year I wasn’t able to celebrate it. However, thank God for the new media, which allowed me to celebrate this holiday virtually with other people. For the first time, I am part of an MMORPG community and I am enjoying it a lot. The people seems very friendly and they are very funny!
Below is my character when I first started:
Here is my character during Halloween, and you can see how others are jokingly communicating with each other:
This is so far my favorite place in the virtual world:
The new media has opened the doors to a more creative world, and I look forward to the time of reputation I will build here.

Creativity
Create a new post on your blog with the above title. In your post, cite at least one of the assigned readings and discuss how new media fosters creativity.
New media continuously foster creativity in societies by breaking communication barriers, thus increases global communication. Individuals are now able to easily express their imagination to others in various ways and thus in modern society we constant see innovation in unique ways. One example is YouTube, and how people use it to creatively to express their imagination visually to the world. In his article Brook Barnes “Disney Tolerates a Rap Parody of Its Critters. But Why?” provides a great example of how new media fosters creativity. Barnes talks about “YouTube videos that turn Bambi, Simba, and Winnie the Pooh into rap stars? YouTube users started posting the videos, set to “Crank That ( Soulja Boy)” by the rapper Soulja Boy”. Basically, YouTube users were fusing two elements into one. This is amazing because creatively combining old cartoons with modern rap videos is a perfect example of what the new media has allowed us to do. Ultimately, the new media foster creativity in society, by giving people the ability to manifest their ideas digitally to the world, which influence others into innovating.
